ABI Research names Starlink and Skylo leaders in D2C satellite ranking, Elveo flagged on innovation

ABI Research has published a competitive ranking of direct-to-cell satellite service providers, naming Starlink and Skylo Technologies as leaders and crediting Elveo Mobile with the innovation lead.

The ranking is one of the first public, structured scorecards of a market that has moved almost entirely on press-release cadence over the past 18 months. Carriers in the US, Europe, Japan and Australia have signed D2C deals with multiple satellite operators in parallel, and the question of who actually leads on network, spectrum and commercial traction has largely been left to analyst inference.

Starlink's leadership position reflects its live service with T-Mobile US and a widening list of international MNO partners. Skylo's position is anchored in narrowband IoT and messaging, where it has signed with device OEMs and chipset vendors to deliver non-terrestrial network (NTN) connectivity over existing geostationary satellite capacity.

The more interesting call in the ABI ranking is Elveo Mobile. Elveo was formed by the merger of Lynk Global and Omnispace, with SES as a major backer. The combined entity inherits Lynk's catalogue of MNO contracts, Omnispace's 60 MHz of S-band MSS spectrum, and a technical architecture that ABI describes as multi-orbit, multi-spectrum and multi-waveform configurable.

"Elveo is emerging as the dark horse in the D2C satellite service provider ecosystem. Following the merger of Lynk and Omnispace with major backing from SES, they command a strong network of MNO partnerships and 60 MHz of valuable MSS spectrum, complemented by a multi-orbit, multi-spectrum, and multi-waveform configurable architecture. To top it off, they've just announced a new manufacturing partnership with Apex Space to aggressively scale satellite production." , Kong, ABI Research, in the firm's press release

ABI also flags a new manufacturing partnership between Elveo and Apex Space, aimed at scaling satellite production. Spectrum ownership and manufacturing throughput are the two constraints most frequently cited by sell-side analysts covering the D2C space, and Elveo now has a defensible position on both.

Watch for the first MNO to publicly commit to Elveo capacity under the new brand, and for any FCC or ITU filings that confirm the spectrum and orbit configuration ABI has credited.
